When a tooth is knocked out of its socket, there is usually so much damage that the tooth is completely lost. Any remnants need to be extracted to prevent further complications and infection.

Once your gums have healed, your Houston Cosmetic & Family Dental Associates dentist can help you understand your options for replacing the knocked-out tooth. While some people prefer to have a bridge installed, a dental implant can fully restore its function and appearance.

First, Dr. Kenneth Kirk will examine the socket. It’s important to find out if you have the sufficient bone structure to secure an implant. If not, you may need to receive a bone graft to restore any lost bone.

Then, an oral surgeon will install the implant by making a careful incision in your gums. A narrow channel will then be made in the bone and a titanium abutment will be screwed into the channel. Titanium is known for being biologically safe and it will actually fuse with your natural bone to create a rock-solid anchor for a dental crown.

Once your gums have healed and the titanium implant has been fully integrated into the surrounding bone tissues, your dentist can go about the process of installing a crown.
